poemless elegy.

I learned about suicide yesterday in health class. And at that time, that's all it was; just another lesson from a textbook. But today it became heartbreakingly real.

The tears and news came together and I had never felt so many emotions at once. Mostly confused. We danced together when we were younger and we went to girls camp together every year. This stuff didn't happen to a girl like her. She was beautiful, funny, talented and friendly. This stuff didn't happen to girls like her.

As we stood around her smiling pictures and celebrated her life that had uplifted so many others I started hugging all my friends. Not just because it was freezing and sharing body warmth was essential, but because I wanted everyone to know how much they meant to me.

It's sad that it took this tragedy to unify us and to open our eyes. One person said to look around and reach out to everyone, to be better friends. And they were right; let's commit today to look out for more people, for the lonely and sad, for the friendless and despaired, for anyone who needs you. Let's be better and realize how fragile life is and how important it is for us to use our fragile life for good.
